The clients, a young couple, came to us with two distinct ideas of home. One loved colour, country-style warmth, and spaces to comfortably sprawl. The other preferred a more urban aesthetic, with an emphasis on order, organisation, and room for a growing collection of books. The challenge was to bring these preferences together into a home that felt natural to both.
Rather than settling on a particular style, we used flexibility and functionality as the starting points for the design. Colourful lime-plastered walls, earthy finishes, and country-inspired details brought warmth and personality, while the planning remained practical and adaptable.
The dining area became one of our most interesting spatial exercises. Positioned at the heart of the home, with beautiful views of the outdoors, it was also a natural thoroughfare to the balcony. A conventional dining arrangement would have interrupted this movement and limited how the space could be used. Instead, we tucked the dining table into a corner adjoining the kitchen, with lighting positioned to accommodate its expansion for larger gatherings. The remaining space became a cosy library corner, complete with a couch and footstool.
This flexibility continued into the living room, where furniture could accommodate everything from lounging and entertaining to working on a laptop. The kitchen incorporated a dedicated baking station, combining country-style architraves with earthy finishes and an unexpected use of colour.
The third bedroom was planned around the clients’ pottery hobby, with a custom worktable incorporating clay storage and a canvas surface for kneading. Even the balcony drainage was modified to accommodate the pottery wheel’s discharge.
The master bedroom brought their contrasting tastes together more playfully. One wanted pink, the other wanted leather. We imagined a den with a softer edge, bringing together rich textures, green drapery, a boudoir-style dressing table, and a generous cuddle chair.
Throughout the home, existing artwork was reframed and reused, new pieces were selected together, and several elements were custom-designed. The result is a home that accommodates two distinct personalities without asking either to compromise on how they like to live.
